Naval Base Charleston
March 12, 2009
What started as the Charleston Navy Yard in 1901 evolved to be Naval Base Charleston that closed in 1996. Over that time the Navy Yard built more than 250 vessels, the majority during WW II. At its height in 1989, 80 ships and submarines were homeported in Charleston.

I was stationed there aboard the USS Sturgeon (SSN-637) from Dec. 1982 to Dec. 1986. Even did an 18 month overhaul in the Charleston Naval Shipyard, dry dock #1 as part of that tour!
