Here in the Navy Yard at Noisette we are proud to house so many beneficial non-profits. The Parents Anonymous of South Carolina is one such group here in the Yard. Founded on the need to create a support system for parents of our community, local parents meet regularly in a group setting to discuss problems, share advice, experience a shared sense of purpose, and if nothing else, to make new friends. This Thanksgiving Parents Anonymous Members would like to share with you:

I feel Parents Anonymous® is like a family because we share our problems and our happiness. In my Parents Anonymous® Group I have found friends to talk with about our family life. I receive help from the other parents, and I share my experiences to help when I can. I have been in this group three years. I love this time. We learn and share good things with each other to make our families happy and strong.

We are thankful for all that Parents Anonymous does for the community and glad they are part of our community here in the Navy Yard.

This month, CEO of the Noisette Company John knott,  has Given several speeches at prominent national and international conferences “West Coast Green,” “Gaining Ground Summit: Resilient Cities” and the shoulder program at Simon Frasier University . As Master developer for the Navy Yard at Noisette, Knott shared his revolutionary theories that have guided him and his company in creating the ultimate of sustainable communities. What differentiates his ideologies from others, is the value Knott has placed on sustainability as a community approach rather than simply ‘Green’ building. He has developed and employed the concepts of “Triple Bottom Line” Sustainability as the guide for every aspect of the Navy Yard at Noisette master plan. This concept states, that in order to be truly sustainable, consideration of the bottom line, People, Planet, Prosperity, must be considered in every decision made.  Knott argues, that a community can never be truly sustainable unless the social needs of the community as whole are addressed. Knott states “Fundamentally, in the end we must build and design to heal our people if we want to save our place and planet.”

As a third generation builder Knott reflects on some of the lessons of his own those he has inherited from his fore fathers .

1. We are not in the building business, but rather the Human Habbitat Business.
   
2. We are not in the development business, but rather the Community Building Business.
3. What I have learned over the the last 40 years:
   

• Community and buildings are living and organic sytems.
• Social and Enviromental health of our people is the most important task we have as proffesionals.
• It is this health that is directly effecting our communities economic health.

The West Coast Green Conference is, according to its organizers, “… the premier conference on green innovation, gathers the brightest minds in green building, business, and technology.” This years conference drew over 9,000 people from 20 different countries. It is is one of the countries largest confrences focused on sustainability. The goal of the Gaining Ground/Resilient Cities Conference is to explore what is needed to make cities more “robust.” Other topics discussed include:

• Innovation in sustainability governance and best current practices for managing sustainable urban systems;
• capturing opportunities in the green economy;
• strategies for building widespread sustainability collaborations that engage the community level.

In an effort to make sure everyone is able to fully apprciate that which is KK5, the event is being held over two nights. Friday will be an artist reception for those of you over 21. This will last from 8pm-11pm and is FREE. Satruday, will be the main event and is for all ages! Doors open at 8pm-2am.

From Downtown:

Option 1.- Head north on meeting until you reach Cosgrove. Turn Right and you found KK5.

Option 2. Head north on I-26. Exit 216B. Stay on Cosgrove till you see a large Silver Building. You’ve found KK5.

From West Ashely.

Take Olde Town Road or Sam Rittenburg North toward I-26. This turns into Cosgrove. Continue Streight till you reach the large Silver building. You’ve Found Kk5

From Mt Pleasant.

Take 17 south. Exit onto I-26. Take exit 216B. Stay on Cosgrove till you see a large Silver Building. You’ve found KK5.

From the North Area.

Take I-26E toward Charleston. Exit 216 B toward FEDERAL COMPLEX. Stay On Cosgrove, untill you see the large Silver building on your right. You’ve found KK5.

The newest workout sensation, Zumba Fitness, is a new trend helping you dance your way into cardio workout. At the core of Zumba, is high energy Latin and international fusion music, with easy to follow dance moves.  Before you know it, you’ll be dancing away like a true pro. Check it out this weekend in 10 Store House Row, were Navy Yard local Rochelle Green, will be hosting the first of two Zumba Events taking place here on the Yard.

Music, Art of all mediums, Dancers, A Starving artist show, A mysterious ‘Midnight room,’ and a killer sponsor to boot. This weekend, the Navy Yard at Noisette, will be the place to be.

Kulture Klash has become Charleston’s (probably the region too!) largest single day art and music event. Featuring over 50+ artist and a slew of DJ’s and local bands, the event will truely have something for everyone. This years theme is Bikes, and attendees are incourged to ride there bikes to the event, taking advantage of the Bicycle Valet upon arrival.  There will be a starving artist show which has drummed up quite a bit of attention. Eight artist, for five days, have camped out in the event space with nothing to eat. Each artist will produce a new work daily to illustrate how the starvation has effected them. Musical acts featured this year will include, Dante’s Camaro, Short Shorts, The V-Tones, plus live sets from DJ Stella, The Bubble Gut Brothers, Righchus, DJ Jeff ET, Danny Seltzer and DJ Belk.

Recently Debuted in Charleston, New Belgium Brewery will be serving a variety of their sensational beers. To meet your dietary needs, my personal favorite, D’allesandro’s will be serving pizzas of all varieties. Our sometimes neighbor Street Foods llc. will be serving up Asian|African Infusion foods throughout the evening as well.

For the first time, KK will held over two days. A free Artist reception will be held on Friday November 6 from 8pm-11pm (21+). The main event is Saturday, November 7 8pm-2am. The Event space is located here on the Navy Yard at Noisette on the corner of Sprurill and Cosgrove. Tickets can be purchased at a variety of locations listed here.

What are you doing in this picture? I am Batiking with hot wax to make a design by hand.

What is your favorite thing about your job? I use it to communicate id educating kids and to express self-esteem in workshops, interpreting history, celebrating culture, and connecting the Sea Island Terrain.

If you could say something positive about the Navy Yard, what would it be? That it feels like a campus. Also, I am such a nature-buff I celebrate these ancient trees and that it’s here on the water.

Favorite Weekend Activity? My favorite is to have a gathering of artist for a potluck dinner.

Song on your iPod we would be surprised to know you have? Young country music talent.

Favorite North Charleston Thing? The North Charleston Cultural Arts Fair

Favorite Local Business or Non-Profit? Mine- Enlightened Vision, which supports national and international artist on a local level.

Where would you like see your company in five years? I am in the midst of creating a Cottage Textile Industry which I would like to seem become viable and intertwined with local business and tourist markets.

What makes your company unique? Its celebrating the international use of Indigo.

Most Challenging Aspect of your work?
It’s a grassroots movement so its not that stable… passionate but not stable.

What is your favorite thing about your job? I get to work with people from farmers and what they’re up and many different types of business people. Just the wide variety of people I encounter every day.

If you could say something positive about the Navy Yard, what would it be? I think they Navy Yard has been a great supporter of non-profits. There have been many able to set up here due to the generosity of the company. It is also very convenient.

Favorite Weekend Activity? Going to the Farmers Market.

Where would you like see your company in five years I would like to see a statewide initiative to promote local spending. I would also like to see the 10% shift we’ve been promoting show measurable economic impact. Also, that we would see an increase of local food coming into our communities.

What makes your company unique? We are the only non-profit strictly dedicated to supporting locally owned businesses and farmers and educating the community of on the economic and environmental importance of supporting local businesses, as well as, the social justice impact that can make.

Most Challenging Aspect of your work? Probably to make people realize we are not a marketing company and although we are trying to encourage local businesses to support each other’s goods and services, we still function as a non-profit.
