USS South Carolina

July 23, 2009

Five ships of the United States Navy have been named USS South Carolina in honor of the eighth state.

* The first USS South Carolina was a schooner built for the Revenue Cutter Service.
* The second USS South Carolina was a coastal patrol vessel.
* The third USS South Carolina was a steamer built in 1860 and served in the American Civil War.
* The fourth USS South Carolina (BB-26) commissioned in 1910 was a dreadnought battleship.
* The fifth USS South Carolina (CGN-37) was a 1972 California-class nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser.

The battleship USS South Carolina, built in Philadelphia, was in service nearly 12 years. The 453 foot ship was scrapped because of a naval treaty limitation. Its steel went in a heap, and its silver service went to the Governor’s mansion in Columbia.
