First Confederate Flag

First Confederate Flag

The Flag of the Palmetto Guards was first flown in New York harbor in 1860 on the bark* Jones by John Bird of Laurens, SC. The flag was raised at Fort Sumter in 1861 as the Palmetto Guards occupied the fort immediately after it was taken by the Confederacy. This flag is the forerunner of the South Carolina state flag.
*Bark (or Barque) were light and fast ships with a shallow draft.
