1941 Launching Ceremony, Navy Yard SC

On December 20, 1941, twelve days after the Pearl Harbor attack, 12,000 Navy Yard Workers pledged to buy one or more war bonds each.  In this photo, John D. Jennings presents the Pledge List to Rear Admiral W.H. Allen at the launching ceremonies for two destroyers, USS Tillman (named for Pitchfork Ben Tillman) and USS Beatty.  Admiral Allen was the Commandant of the Charleston Navy Yard and Commander of the Shipyard for four years, 1938-1942.  Notice the shadows of the people on the deck of the USS Beatty on the right cast onto the hull of the USS Tillman.  Most likely these are the shadows of the ship’s crew.
