The area where the Navy Yard at Noisette is located has been home to many different groups over the years. Native Americans first called this area home. Through colonial times, tribes like the Wando, Kiawah and Etowah often proved friendly to newcomers, even to the point of supporting English settlers against Spanish raiders. Other tribes like the Kussoe and Stono violently opposed colonial incursion. Regardless, each tribe met the same fate. By the end of the 19th century, virtually all evidence of their civilizations vanished. Today, only their names survive on rivers, islands and other features.
