Hey Geoff, I was riding my bike through the gardens the other day and was struck at how absolutely beautiful the old officer’s homes are. What is becoming of them? I know some of the buildings are becoming commercial property – but what about those gorgeous old homes?!
What a great place to take a bike ride!
The vision is for that area to serve primarily as a community space, preserving the landscape and history. Most of the buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. The zoning allows for multi-use and some will be better served in commercial capacities. With a few exceptions, the plan calls for hospitality and office use. We are pursuing the creation of a wedding and event venue in the large brick structure near Riverfront Park known as H&I. Also, Some of the buildings will be used for non-profit use.
We were stationed with a destroyer squadron in Charleston from ’87 until ’91. Our (regular) quarters were across the street form the Admiral’s beautiful home. We loved living there. I hope it is preserved.
